New Zealand’s North and South islands stretch 932 miles from 34 degrees to 47 degrees south latitude. There are approximately 64,000 acres of vineyards. The Maori named the region Aotearoa, meaning "land of the long white cloud.”
Climatically, the northernmost point of the north island experiences the warmest temperatures, while the southernmost point experiences the warmest - harvest in the north usually begins in February, while the south doesn’t start until April.
The best vineyards are those with less rain, less fertile soils, good drainage, and long, cool seasons, with abundant sunshine. These conditions produce good conditions and adequate sugar.
On the northern bay of the south island and sheltered by the Southern Alps to the west, Nelson experiences low rainfall and a cool climate, perfect for cool climate varieties.
New Zealand is most known for cool climate grapes such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Noir. Since New Zealand’s grape harvest is in the first half of the year, their new vintage wines are released six months before those in the Northern Hemisphere, which gives them an advantage in the world wine market.
